Tata Group leadership dispute triggers political clash between Rahul Gandhi and Nirmala Sitharaman

A leadership dispute within the Tata Group has escalated into a political confrontation between Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The conflict centers on the proposed reappointment of N. Chandrasekaran as executive chairman of Tata Sons for a second five-year term. Noel Tata, chairperson of Tata Trusts, has reportedly opposed the resolution, questioning the board's procedures and the interpretation of the company's Articles of Association.

Rahul Gandhi accused the government of allowing the Tata Group to be “criminally destroyed” and suggested that Indian businesses are being treated as a “plaything” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. He also questioned why representatives from Tata Trusts and Tata Sons were allegedly hosted at Amit Shah’s residence.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman responded by accusing Gandhi of politicizing commercial and legal matters and spreading “distrust and toxicity” among Indian entrepreneurs. She criticized the Congress party’s historical economic record, specifically citing the “Licence-Quota Raj,” and asserted that the current administration values industry as a driver of economic growth.
