Amit Shah offers 24-hour parliamentary debate on student protests

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has offered a 24-hour continuous parliamentary discussion to address the recent police action against students protesting the NEET paper leak. Shah proposed the debate run from 3 pm Wednesday to 3 pm Thursday, contingent on the Opposition submitting a formal request to the Speaker. He stated the government has nothing to hide and is ready to answer all questions.

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi rejected the offer, characterizing it as a “lecture” rather than a meaningful debate. Gandhi demanded direct accountability, specifically asking who authorized the use of pellet guns and lathis against protesters. He argued that the Home Ministry is responsible for the Delhi Police and stated that Shah should resign either for issuing the orders or for being incompetent if he was unaware of them.

The standoff has caused significant disruptions in the Lok Sabha, with the Monsoon Session facing consecutive days of lost Question Hours and Zero Hours. While the government maintains it is ready to discuss the July 20 incident, the Opposition continues to demand specific answers regarding the alleged brutality used against the younger generation during the protests.
