Rahul Gandhi and opposition MPs detained during Delhi protest against Election Commission
Opposition leaders from the INDIA bloc, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, staged multiple protests in New Delhi demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The demonstrations were sparked by allegations of irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which critics claim could disenfranchise millions of voters.
During the protests, which included marches from Parliament House and sit-ins at Akashvani Bhawan and Jantar Mantar, Delhi Police detained approximately 250 to 300 individuals, including several Members of Parliament. Police registered an FIR against Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and other MPs for allegedly entering the Akashvani Bhawan premises without permission.
The Election Commission has denied allegations of political bias, stating that the SIR process is intended to remove duplicate and ineligible entries from voter lists. The Commission also clarified that no formal meeting requests had been submitted by political parties prior to the protests on October 6.
