Delhi Police registers FIR in pellet gun injury case after Rahul Gandhi protest

Delhi Police has registered a First Information Report (FIR) against unidentified persons following a protest by Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi. The FIR concerns allegations that 19-year-old student Sahil Lochab sustained severe injuries, including damage to his eyesight, from pellet gun fire during a student protest at Jantar Mantar on July 20.

Rahul Gandhi staged an eight-hour sit-in at the Parliament Street police station to demand the registration of the case, alleging that police had previously refused to file it due to orders from higher authorities. Gandhi claimed that medical reports from AIIMS show Lochab has over 200 pellets lodged in his body, including three in his eye. While Delhi Police have denied using pellet guns during the protest, the FIR has been filed under Sections 118 and 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The incident has sparked significant political tension. The Supreme Court has already formed a five-member high-powered inquiry committee to investigate the violence that occurred during the July 20 protest march.
