Rai to replace Rai Scuola with new regional identity channel

Rai has announced that the educational channel Rai Scuola will cease broadcasting on digital terrestrial channel 57, effective October 1, 2026. The channel will be replaced by 'Canale Territorio' (also referred to as 'Italiana'), a new network dedicated to exploring Italian regional identities, local craftsmanship, gastronomy, and 'Made in Italy' excellence.

The decision has sparked debate. Critics and a Change.org petition, which garnered over 11,000 signatures, argue that the closure undermines public service, noting Rai Scuola's vital role as a virtual classroom during the pandemic. Conversely, supporters of the move point to Auditel data showing the channel's low viewership, averaging approximately 0.10% share, suggesting that maintaining a linear channel for low-audience educational content is an inefficient use of public resources.

Rai stated that the educational heritage of Rai Scuola will not be lost, as much of its content will remain available on the RaiPlay on-demand platform. The new channel will build upon the programming style of existing shows like 'Linea Verde' to focus on national territories and local traditions.
