Rail Baltica project deadline extended to 2034 by Baltic states

The Baltic states have reached an agreement to extend the deadline for the first phase of the Rail Baltica project to 2034, acknowledging that the previous 2030 target was not realistic. The project is viewed as a strategic priority for European security, military mobility, and economic competitiveness.

Despite the regional extension, Lithuania intends to pursue its original goal of completing the rail line from Kaunas to Panevėžis by 2030. Lithuanian Transport Minister Jurs Taminsks stated the country is preparing to meet this timeline, supported by LTG Infra, which continues design and procurement work.

In Estonia, officials noted that while construction is most advanced, significant funding challenges remain, particularly regarding the availability of EU grants after 2027. Meanwhile, progress in Latvia has faced delays attributed to political shifts and decision-making processes.
