Rail infrastructure modernization underway in Germany and the Netherlands

Major railway infrastructure projects are underway in Germany and the Netherlands to modernize transit and increase freight capacity.

In Hamburg, Germany, the U3 subway line is experiencing service suspensions between St. Pauli and Rathaus due to modernization efforts. The Hochbahn is replacing approximately 860 historic wooden sleepers with more durable plastic sleepers, renewing rail expansion devices, and updating sections of the track and roadway to ensure the reliability of the century-old line. These works are expected to continue through October 29, 2026.

In the Netherlands, ProRail is managing several significant rail developments. In Vught, a historic station building is scheduled to be relocated on October 30, 2026. Additionally, extensive modernization of safety systems and tracks is planned for North Holland between November 9 and November 20, 2026, which will result in train cancellations.

Furthermore, a major expansion of the Waalhaven Zuid marshalling yard in Rotterdam is set to begin in late 2026. Contracted to VolkerRail, the project aims to accommodate longer freight trains of up to 740 meters and provide additional locomotive parking. The expansion, expected to conclude by late 2028, includes track renewal and further electrification to enhance the efficiency of rail freight services.
