Rail Safety Week 2026 begins in Australia and New Zealand
Rail Safety Week 2026 is being observed from August 10 to August 16, marking the 21st year of the annual community awareness initiative in Australia and New Zealand. More than 150 organizations, including government agencies, law enforcement, and industry groups, are participating to promote safe practices around rail networks.
A central component of this year's observance is the launch of TrackSAFE’s new national campaign, "When Roads Cross Rail. Follow the Signs," which aims to educate motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians on navigating railway crossings safely. This follows data reporting 5 fatalities, 17 injuries, and 893 near-misses at railway crossings in 2025.
Events include a memorial service at the Australian Railway Monument in Werris Creek, NSW, to honor rail workers who lost their lives. Additionally, in Canberra, winning designs from a student poster competition will be utilized as safety wraps on light rail vehicles to increase visibility and awareness.
