Raila Odinga: Legacy of cultural ties and political ambitions

One year after the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, reflections on his political legacy and cultural connections continue to emerge in Kenya. Odinga maintained a significant ancestral and cultural bond with the Wanga Kingdom in Kakamega County, claiming descent from the royal line of Nabongo Wanga. This relationship fostered unity between the Luo and Luhya communities and led to his support for the Nabongo Mumia Cultural Centre in 2008.

Siaya Governor James Orengo, a long-time associate of Odinga, stated that the late leader had intended to make a final bid for the presidency in 2027. Orengo expressed concerns regarding the current political landscape, accusing President William Ruto’s government of failing to honor a previously agreed-upon 10-point agenda and suggesting that the leadership of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has drifted from its founding principles.
