Railfare strategies for finding lower ticket prices

Rail travel passengers can find cost savings by navigating various fare anomalies and booking methods. While station and online prices are generally identical, some operators offer exclusive discounts on their own websites or at specific stations. Certain advance tickets for same-day travel may only be available online rather than at booking offices.

Ticket purchasing limitations exist at station machines; for instance, machines may only allow ‘walk-on’ tickets for travel on the current or following day. Specific operators also have hardware limitations, such as Northern’s machines printing paper tickets that cannot be used for cross-London travel, or Cross-Country machines being unable to print tickets to stations beyond their specific network.
