European railways advance digitalization and infrastructure projects

European railway operators are advancing digitalization and infrastructure through several key initiatives. In Austria, ÖBB has begun a 65 million euro reconstruction of the Straßwalchen station, scheduled for completion by late 2028. This project includes new platforms, passenger passages, and photovoltaic glass roofs.

Technological advancements are also being tested in freight and autonomous operations. ÖBB demonstrated the Digital Automatic Coupling (DAC) at the Wien-Floridsdorf freight station. This technology aims to replace manual screw couplings to improve safety, efficiency, and data transmission across the train. Meanwhile, in Germany, the AutomatedTrain project successfully demonstrated the technical feasibility of driverless train operations on the Havelländische Eisenbahn grounds, supported by 41.5 million euros in federal funding.

To support these modernizations, ÖBB and Deutsche Bahn (DB) are increasing investments in workforce development. ÖBB reported a record 2,421 apprentices, supported by an expanded training center in Graz, while DB is recruiting approximately 5,200 new trainees and students to address the specialized labor needs of the rail sector.
