Railway embankment collapse suspends traffic in Constanța, Romania
Railway traffic between Eforie Nord and Eforie Sud in Constanța County has been temporarily suspended following an embankment collapse. The incident occurred at kilometer marker 241+590, affecting the route between Constanța and Mangalia. Six passenger trains have been impacted by the disruption.
The Constanța County Committee for Emergency Situations held an extraordinary meeting to manage the crisis. Authorities from the National Railway Company (CFR SA) and the Department for Emergency Situations (DSU) have implemented urgent measures, including securing the area and conducting technical expertise to identify the cause of the instability. Heavy rainfall in the region is suspected to be a contributing factor, as Constanța remains under orange-level weather warnings for heavy precipitation.
CFR will provide alternative transport for passengers on the Constanța–Mangalia route until the issue is resolved. While repairs could take a few hours, officials warned that in a worst-case scenario, the disruption could last several days. Resumption of service depends on the completion of ground consolidation works and technical confirmation that the infrastructure is safe for traffic.
