Railway history and cultural routes highlighted through new travel experiences

New cultural and travel experiences are highlighting the historical significance of railway journeys. In Békéscsaba, Hungary, a new installation has been unveiled at the tourist railway station to commemorate the travels of the world-renowned painter Mihály Munkácsy. Based on research by historian Ágnes Szalay, the installation includes a historical railway map and informative plaques detailing the routes Munkácsy took via train, uncovering lesser-known connections to locations such as Banffyhunyad and Cluj-Napoca.

On a broader scale, the legacy of the Silk Road is being explored through a 22-day luxury rail journey titled ‘The Grand Silk Road by Train’. Operated by Golden Eagle Luxury Trains, the 3,900-kilometer route traverses China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. The expedition aims to connect travelers with the ancient commercial and cultural landmarks of Central Asia through an exclusive rail experience.
