Railway infrastructure debate in Calabria over Sibari bypass

Discussions are ongoing regarding the implementation of a railway bypass south of Sibari to improve mobility for the Ionian region of Calabria, which serves over 300,000 inhabitants.

There is currently a debate between two technical solutions: a 'lunetta' (a more economical option proposed by RFI) and a 'bretella' (a larger deviation track or bypass). Proponents of the bypass argue that a wide-radius deviation would significantly reduce travel times between Crotone and Paola from three hours to just over two hours.

While the 'lunetta' is cheaper, critics suggest it may limit the connectivity intended for the lower Ionian area. The proposed infrastructure aims to avoid train delays and locomotive changes at Sibari station, aligning the region with standard Italian railway bypass models used in other major transit corridors.
