Railway infrastructure developments in Colombia and Argentina

In Colombia, the government is working to revitalize the national railway network, which has seen a significant decline in operation. Currently, only 1,067 kilometers of the historical 3,533-kilometer network are functional. The national goal is to establish 5,278 kilometers of rail corridors by 2050 to improve competitiveness and mitigate climate change. During the First National Railway Summit in Paipa, Transport Minister Elsa Noguera pledged government support for this transition, while the National Infrastructure Agency (ANI) announced the continuation of five strategic projects to integrate the country's transport modes.

In Mendoza, Argentina, the provincial government has signed an addendum to advance the Suburban Train (Tren de Cercanías) project. A strategic technical decision was made to use a dual-gauge system, allowing medium-gauge passenger trains to share tracks with wide-gauge freight trains. This modification, formalized via Decree 1801, specifically affects the section between San Martín and Gutiérrez. This technical alignment allows for potential compatibility with the existing Metrotranvía network, potentially enabling continuous travel from the eastern zone to Greater Mendoza and the airport without requiring passenger transfers.
