Rainbow Hospital manages rare MCMA twin pregnancy in Bangalore

Rainbow Hospital in Bangalore successfully managed a rare Monochorionic Monoamniotic (MCMA) twin pregnancy, resulting in the safe delivery of two healthy baby girls. The case involved a 37-year-old woman with a history of primary infertility.

MCMA pregnancies are a rare form of identical twin gestation, accounting for approximately 1% of all twin pregnancies. In these cases, both fetuses share a single placenta and a single amniotic sac, which carries high risks such as umbilical cord entanglement, fetal growth restriction, and twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS). Historically, perinatal mortality rates for MCMA pregnancies have been as high as 70–80%.

The medical team, including Dr. Manju B Nair, Dr. Manjula Deepak, and fetal medicine specialist Dr. Kavyashree, utilized a comprehensive surveillance protocol. This included detailed ultrasound examinations every two weeks starting from 16 weeks of gestation to monitor fetal growth, amniotic fluid, and Doppler parameters.
