Rainforest Wild Adventure welcomes Southeast Asia’s first okapi calf

Rainforest Wild Adventure has announced the birth of Southeast Asia’s first okapi calf. The male calf was born on July 27, 2026, to first-time parents Kisala, aged seven, and Xandor, aged four.

As of late September, the calf has grown from an initial weight of approximately 20kg to 48kg. The parents arrived in Singapore as part of the EAZA Ex situ Programme, a coordinated breeding initiative for threatened species.

Okapis, which are the closest living relatives of giraffes, are listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List and are native to the northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. To accommodate the species' natural instinct to remain hidden from predators, the care team utilized a secluded calving box to allow the calf to rest and feed undisturbed.
