Raja Ampat ecosystem protection prioritized after turtle hunting incident
The Indonesian Ministry of Tourism has announced a zero-tolerance policy regarding the destruction of the Raja Ampat ecosystem following allegations that a Chinese tourist, Wei Shang, hunted and consumed turtles in the Piaynemo waters of Southwest Papua.
The incident gained attention after video footage circulated on social media. Immigration officials detained the individual in Makassar while he was attempting to depart for Kuala Lumpur on September 14, 2026.
Authorities are calling for a full investigation that extends beyond the primary perpetrator. The Ministry emphasized that any parties found providing tools, transportation, or facilitation for such illegal activities must also be held legally accountable. Tourism operators, guides, and accommodation providers are being urged to ensure all visitors understand local conservation laws, which strictly prohibit harming protected wildlife, damaging coral reefs, or removing marine biota.
