Rajamouli says 80% of IMAX Film 'Varanasi' Completed, Details on Scale and Release

Director S.S. Rajamouli confirmed that about 80 % of his upcoming epic "Varanasi" has been shot, with the remaining scenes in post‑production. The film, starring Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran, is being filmed for IMAX to capture its massive visual scope, including 300‑foot Antarctic ice formations and large armies drawn from the Ramayana. Rajamouli explained that the IMAX aspect ratio allows audiences to fully experience the grandeur of these sequences.

He also detailed the production workflow: as each scene is filmed it is edited and sent to the visual‑effects team, keeping the project on schedule. The story reportedly begins in Varanasi, then moves through Antarctica, Africa and ancient Rome before returning to Varanasi. The film is slated for release on 7 April 2027.
