Rajasthan mayoral elections scheduled for September 25

The Rajasthan State Election Commission has scheduled mayoral elections for Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Kota, along with the Suket Municipality chairperson, for September 25. This follows the conclusion of urban local body elections and subsequent re-polling necessitated by technical malfunctions with Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) at several booths.

In the Jaipur Municipal Corporation, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) remains the largest group with 78 seats, while the Indian National Congress (INC) holds 57 seats following a sweep of the four wards that underwent re-polling. In Jodhpur, the BJP secured 45 wards to the Congress's 44, with 11 seats held by independents. In Kota, the BJP secured a majority with 57 councillors, allowing them to form the board.

The re-polling results have triggered political tension. The Congress has accused the ruling BJP of facilitating ‘horse-trading’ and bribery to influence the formation of municipal boards. Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot alleged that officials were pressuring local leaders to ensure BJP-backed outcomes. The mayoral and deputy mayoral elections, originally slated for late September, have been postponed due to the re-polling process.
