Rajasthan experiences record heat as monsoon withdraws
As the monsoon withdraws from North India, several regions are experiencing a significant and unusual spike in temperatures. In Rajasthan, western districts have seen temperatures soar, with six districts recording highs above 40 degrees Celsius.
Barmer and Jaisalmer have reported some of the highest temperatures for September in the last decade. Barmer recorded temperatures as high as 43.6 degrees Celsius, while Jaisalmer reached 43.2 degrees Celsius. Other affected areas include Jodhpur, Bikaner, Churu, and Nagaur. These temperatures are notably higher than normal, in some cases exceeding typical averages by nearly 7 degrees Celsius.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributes this heat to the monsoon's retreat and the influence of strong western winds. As monsoon clouds dissipate and skies clear in the northwest, the ground heats more effectively. While western India faces these rising temperatures, eastern and central parts of the country continue to experience heavy rainfall due to a deep depression in the Bay of Bengal.
