Rajasthan Police issues cyber alert over fake wedding card scams
The Rajasthan Police Cyber Crime Wing (R4C) has issued an advisory warning the public about a new cyber fraud tactic involving fake online wedding invitations. During the wedding season, scammers are using WhatsApp and other social media platforms to send suspicious files or links under the guise of wedding cards, hotel locations, or pre-wedding photos and videos.
According to ADG Cyber Crime VK Singh, these messages often include APK files or phishing links. If downloaded or clicked, these can install malware on a mobile device to steal sensitive data, including personal information, SMS OTPs, and banking credentials. In some instances, scammers may even hack a contact's WhatsApp account to send these messages, making the invitation appear to come from a known acquaintance.
Authorities urge citizens not to download unknown APK files or click on suspicious links that request banking details or passwords. The police continue to conduct awareness campaigns to protect the public from these evolving digital threats.
