Rajasthan Police issues cybersecurity advisories for smartphones and Wi-Fi

The Cyber Crime Branch of the Rajasthan Police has issued advisories to citizens regarding smartphone theft and Wi-Fi network security to prevent financial loss and data breaches.

In the event of a lost or stolen smartphone, authorities recommend using ‘Find My Device’ for Android or ‘Find My iPhone’ to remotely lock the device. Users are urged to immediately block mobile banking, UPI, and digital wallets through official banking channels. Additionally, the SIM card should be deactivated via the service provider to prevent unauthorized access to OTPs and account recovery processes. It is also advised to change passwords for email and social media accounts and review logged-in device lists.

Regarding wireless security, the police warned that weak router settings can lead to data leaks and hacking. Citizens are advised to change default administrator usernames and passwords on their routers and set strong Wi-Fi passwords using a mix of letters, numbers, and special characters. The advisory recommends using WPA3 encryption if available, or at least WPA2-AES, and avoiding obsolete protocols like WEP or WPA. Users can monitor connected devices through their router’s administration page to identify and remove unauthorized users.
