Rajnath Singh begins three-day visit to Sri Lanka to boost defence ties

Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has commenced a three-day official visit to Sri Lanka, marking the first visit by an Indian Defence Minister to the island nation in 38 years. Leading a high-level delegation from the Ministries of Defence and External Affairs, Singh is scheduled to hold high-level discussions with Sri Lankan leadership, including President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya.

The visit focuses on deepening bilateral defence and maritime security cooperation, aligned with India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and the MAHASAGAR vision. Discussions are expected to cover the implementation of previous defence cooperation agreements and regional security stability in the Indian Ocean.

During the visit, Singh will also interact with the Indian diaspora in Colombo. Coinciding with the diplomatic mission, the Indian Navy’s advanced indigenous stealth guided-missile frigate, INS Udaygiri, arrived at the Colombo port to participate in naval traditions and knowledge-sharing exercises with the Sri Lanka Navy. To facilitate the VIP motorcade, the Colombo Traffic Division has implemented special traffic restrictions across several major routes in the city.
