India and Sri Lanka strengthen defence and maritime ties

During a three-day official visit to Colombo, Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya to strengthen bilateral ties. The discussions focused on maritime security, regional stability in the Indian Ocean, and development cooperation.

Two nations signed three defence Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs). These include the modernization of six L70 air-defence guns operated by the Sri Lankan Air Force, cooperation between the National Cadet Corps (NCC), and a partnership between their respective National Defence Colleges (NDC). President Dissanayake assured India that Sri Lankan territory would not be used for activities against India's security interests.

Beyond defence, the visit highlighted economic and healthcare cooperation. Sri Lanka is actively seeking to deepen partnerships with India in pharmaceutical manufacturing and healthcare technologies to reduce dependency on drug imports. Additionally, Singh highlighted India's economic growth and its commitment to supporting Sri Lanka during future crises.
