Monsoon floods kill at least 25 in Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Nagaland
Heavy monsoon rains that began on July 20 swept across northern India, triggering flash floods and landslides in Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Nagaland and other states. In the border districts of Poonch, Rajouri and Doda in Jammu & Kashmir, at least 15 people were confirmed dead and several others missing as landslides buried homes and roads. Uttarakhand recorded two deaths from lightning strikes, while Nagaland’s Mon district suffered nine fatalities from landslides and flooding. Separate flood events in Assam and other regions added further casualties, bringing the reported death toll for the broader monsoon disaster to around 25.
Rescue and relief operations involving the State Disaster Response Force, National Disaster Response Force, Indian Army, Border Roads Organisation and local volunteers were launched. Hundreds of roads were cleared, power and water supplies restored, and missing persons continue to be searched for. Authorities placed the affected districts on high alert, set up control rooms, and urged people to avoid travel in vulnerable areas.
Religious pilgrimages were suspended as a precaution: the Amarnath Yatra and the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage were halted pending safety clearance. The Jammu & Kashmir government, led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, pledged financial assistance and swift rehabilitation for affected families.
