Rajpal Yadav ordered by Supreme Court to deposit ₹2 crore in cheque-bounce case
The Supreme Court of India has directed actor Rajpal Yadav to deposit ₹2 crore by October 13 to address a long-standing cheque-bounce case. During the hearing, Yadav personally submitted a demand draft for ₹1.15 crore. The remaining ₹85 lakh is expected to be provided by a prospective buyer of Yadav’s ancestral property, who was present in court.
The legal dispute originates from a 2010 loan of ₹5 crore taken from Murli Projects Pvt Ltd to finance Yadav’s directorial film, ‘Ata Pata Laapata’. Following the film’s poor performance, seven cheques issued for repayment were dishonoured. Yadav and his wife were previously convicted by the Delhi High Court, receiving a three-month sentence, a ruling Yadav is now challenging.
During the proceedings, the bench, led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, expressed dissatisfaction with Yadav’s conduct and warned that his sentence could be enhanced to two years if court directions are not met. Yadav testified to significant financial losses, claiming the film project resulted in losses of up to ₹250 crore. In a light-hearted exchange, the Chief Justice advised the actor to make a good movie to rebuild his public image.
