Rakan Al-Thani detained in Germany facing extradition to Spain
Rakan Al-Thani, a member of the Qatari royal family and former board member of Málaga CF, was detained at Munich Airport on September 12 while attempting to board a flight to Doha. His arrest follows a European Arrest Warrant issued by Spanish authorities regarding the financial management of Málaga CF during the Al Thani family's ownership.
Al Thani is currently held in a Bavarian prison as legal proceedings for his extradition to Spain proceed. The Málaga court has requested the translation of the European Arrest Warrant into German to facilitate the process.
The investigation involves Rakan Al-Thani, his father Abdullah Al-Thani, and his brothers Nasser and Nayef. They are accused of misappropriation, unfair administration, forgery, and fraud. Prosecutors are seeking prison sentences of up to 14.5 years for the family members involved. The case stems from allegations that millions of euros were diverted from the club through various companies between 2012 and 2019, contributing to the club's financial decline.
