Takuya Kai traded from Giants to Rakuten Eagles

The Yomiuri Giants and Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles have officially announced a cash trade involving catcher Takuya Kai. The 33-year-old, a former multi-time Golden Glove winner and WBC representative, moves to Rakuten after a challenging season in Tokyo where he appeared in only 13 first-team games.

The trade is considered highly unusual as Kai is currently in the second year of a five-year, estimated 1.5 billion yen contract signed as a free agent in 2024. Giants management stated the decision was made to prioritize the player's career and provide him with more playing opportunities.

For Rakuten, the acquisition addresses a thin catcher depth following the release of several players and reports that primary catcher Hikaru Ota may exercise his domestic free agency rights. Rakuten GM Ishii noted that Kai brings a winning mentality and experience that will benefit the team's younger players.
