Rakuten Viber launches in-app travel eSIM service in the Philippines

Rakuten Viber has launched an in-app travel eSIM service, initially rolling out in the Philippines. The feature allows users to purchase data-only roaming packages for international travel directly within the messaging app, eliminating the need to swap physical SIM cards or install separate applications.

The service utilizes Rakuten Mobile’s AI-enabled, cloud-native eSIM platform. Users can access the eSIM store via the app’s ‘More’ or ‘Calls’ screens, select from various data plans covering hundreds of destinations, and complete purchases using integrated payment methods. To ensure security, transactions are screened using Viber’s existing fraud models alongside Stripe’s anti-fraud tools.

This expansion is part of Viber’s strategic goal to evolve into a ‘super app’ by integrating diverse utilities such as Viber Pay, Business Accounts, and now international connectivity. The company noted that the eSIM feature complements its Viber Out service for international calling.
