Raúl Alfonsín leads historic UCR rally at Ferro stadium

A historical retrospective examines the ‘Alfonsinazo’, a significant political rally held at the Ferrocarril Oeste stadium in Caballito, Buenos Aires. Despite a general strike organized by the Unión Tranviarios Automotor (UTA), the Unión Cívica Radical (UCR) successfully mobilized large columns of militants from both the city and the metropolitan area.

The event featured Raúl Alfonsín as the central speaker, accompanied by Fernando de la Rúa. The rally served as a strategic attempt by the UCR to demonstrate its capacity for mass mobilization and to position itself as a viable political alternative to Peronism by emphasizing civic values, legality, and honesty in public service.
