Ralf König to receive North Rhine-Westphalia Order of Merit

German comic artist Ralf König is to be awarded the Order of Merit of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The announcement was made by the state's press and information service.

König, a pioneer in the gay comic scene since the 1980s, is recognized for using his work to spark debates regarding sexuality, religion, politics, and social roles. His comics, such as ‘Der bewegte Mann’ and ‘Kondom des Grauens’, have been credited with contributing to sexual education and breaking social taboos through humor and self-irony.

König will be one of 16 recipients honored by Minister-President Hendrik Wüst at the state chancery in Düsseldorf. Reflecting on the honor via Facebook, König described the recognition as ‘somewhat curious’ given his early beginnings with felt-tip pens, but noted that he is honored by the distinction.
