Ralf Rangnick criticizes Austria's World Cup performance

Austria national team coach Ralf Rangnick has issued a critical analysis of the team’s performance following their 0-3 loss to Spain in the World Cup Round of 16. While acknowledging the result was expected, Rangnick expressed dissatisfaction with the team's development and physical condition.

Rangnick noted that in key metrics such as sprinting, ball recovery in the final third, and counter-attacking, Austria ranked between 25th and 35th out of 48 teams, a significant drop from their top-three ranking during Euro 2024. He attributed this decline largely to fitness issues, stating that eight players were not at full match fitness during the tournament, specifically naming Xaver Schlager.

Despite discussions regarding the evolution of football tactics, Rangnick reaffirmed his commitment to a pressing-based style, dismissing suggestions that the approach is outdated.
