Ralf Schumacher defends Max Verstappen after Dutch Grand Prix crash

Ralf Schumacher has defended Max Verstappen following the driver's heavy crash during the opening lap of the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort. Speaking on the ‘Backstage Boxengasse’ podcast, the former F1 driver argued that labeling the incident a simple driver error overlooks the complex circumstances involved.

Schumacher noted that the track conditions were mixed, being both half-dry and half-wet, a scenario where Verstappen typically excels. He suggested the crash could have been the result of the driver hitting a treacherous wet patch rather than a pure mistake.

Furthermore, Schumacher highlighted that Verstappen’s decision to take risks was driven by mounting frustration with the Red Bull car's performance. He noted that if the maneuver had succeeded, Verstappen would have emerged as a ‘hero’ by overtaking multiple competitors, but instead, the high-risk attempt resulted in a significant impact with the barriers.
