Ralf Schumacher explains origin of ‘Rolex Ralf’ nickname
Ralf Schumacher has shared the story behind his well-known nickname, ‘Rolex Ralf’. Speaking on the Sky podcast ‘Backstage Boxengasse’, the 51-year-old former Formula 1 driver addressed the origins of the moniker.
Schumacher explained that the name arose during his transition to the top tier of racing following a title win in the Japanese Formula Nippon series. After receiving prize money from his success in Japan, he purchased a used Rolex Daytona with a leather strap and a gold-black dial. He wore the watch to Hockenheim for test drives offered by McLaren-Mercedes.
According to Schumacher, the nickname was coined by a journalist who felt insulted when his manager, Willi Weber, abruptly ended an interview session. Schumacher noted that while the circumstances were unusual, he felt he could not control the resulting reputation.
