Ralph Carr faces sentencing for rape and sexual assault

Former entertainment agent Ralph Carr, 66, is scheduled to appear before the County Court of Victoria on Tuesday to face sentencing following his conviction on two counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. The jury found Carr guilty in July of assaulting a woman in early 2023 during a meeting intended to discuss work opportunities.

Carr’s legal team has requested a stay of sentencing, arguing that the convictions represent a “most obvious miscarriage of justice” and that there is a genuine prospect of a successful appeal. His barrister, Dermot Dann KC, noted that Carr’s mental health has deteriorated significantly while in custody, citing suicidal thoughts and anxiety following the lifting of a suppression order that previously protected his identity.

Prosecutors are opposing the delay, urging Judge Frank Gucciardo to impose a “significant” term of imprisonment. The prosecution emphasized the vulnerability of the victim and stated the crimes were committed solely for the accused’s sexual gratification.
