Ram Govind Chaudhary, former UP Leader of the Opposition, dies at 73

Ram Govind Chaudhary, a veteran Samajwadi Party leader and former Leader of the Opposition in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, passed away at age 73 on Friday night. He died while undergoing treatment for heart and kidney-related ailments at the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) in Lucknow.

Chaudhary was an eight-time MLA who represented constituencies including Chilkahar and Bansdih. He served as a minister in the state governments led by Mulayam Singh Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav. His political career began in student politics and included active participation in democratic movements during the Emergency.

Political leaders from across the spectrum, including Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, and Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya, paid tribute to his legacy. Akhilesh Yadav described him as a ‘beacon of socialist ideology’ and a lifelong crusader for social justice.
