Rama 9 Data Center oil contamination cleanup underway

The Pollution Control Department (PCD) and the Huai Khwang District Office are managing an oil contamination incident at the DAMAC Digital Thailand (BKK 01) data center located in the Rama 9 area. The contamination was discovered in the facility's wastewater holding tanks and public drainage pipes, posing a risk of flowing into the Samsen Nai Canal.

Jenko Co., Ltd. has been contracted to treat and dispose of the contaminated wastewater and sludge. Cleanup efforts include using sandbags to block drainage areas, applying oil-removing agents, and vacuuming wastewater for proper disposal. Officials reported that approximately 30 cubic meters of wastewater have been pumped out, and about 60% of the waste has been removed from the site.

Environmental monitoring shows progress, with Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in the drainage pipes decreasing from 3 ppm to 1.2 ppm. Testing in the internal holding tanks showed levels of VOCs, hydrogen sulfide, and Lower Explosive Limit (LEL) at 0 ppm following initial cleaning. Due to the volume of wastewater exceeding initial estimates, operations were temporarily paused to allow for transport, with measures taken to prevent runoff during heavy rain.
