Ramazan Başak questions bribery convictions in Aktaş case
Following the Aziz İhsan Aktaş court ruling, former MASAK Deputy Chairman Ramazan Başak has raised questions regarding the legal basis for bribery convictions against several mayors. Başak noted that while convictions for bribery, bid rigging, and money laundering were issued, there appears to be a lack of concrete evidence regarding criminal proceeds for certain individuals.
Specifically, Başak pointed out that while mayors Zeydan Karalar of Adana, Utku Caner Çaykara of Avcılar, Oya Tekin of Seyhan, and Kadir Aydar of Ceyhan were sentenced for bribery, the legal process for these individuals seemingly stopped at the stage of the crime itself. He argued that in such cases, the process typically follows a sequence of crime, criminal proceeds, laundering, and asset seizure. He questioned how bribery could be legally established and punished without the concrete identification of the resulting income, noting that MASAK reports did not appear to contain findings related to criminal proceeds or money laundering for these specific cases.
