Union Minister Ramdas Athawale, president of the Republican Party of India (Athawale), has called for sedition charges to be filed against individuals who oppose the caste-based reservation system or demand its abolition. Athawale asserted that because reservation is a constitutional right, opposing it is equivalent to opposing the Constitution of India.

His remarks follow recent demonstrations at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, where protesters gathered with banners and saffron flags to demand that reservation eligibility be determined by economic status rather than caste identity. Delhi Police stated that no permission had been granted for such a gathering and warned the public against following misleading social media posts regarding reservation reforms.

Athawale also alleged that organized social media campaigns are actively working to undermine or remove the existing quota system. Union Minister Chirag Paswan has also voiced support for the pro-reservation position.
