Ramiz Salčin: Commemorating the defender of Sarajevo

August 22 marks the anniversary of the death of Ramiz Salčin, a prominent commander during the defense of Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Salčin, who was 38 years old at the time of his death in 1992, served as the commander of the Municipal Staff of the Territorial Defense for Novi Grad.

During the siege, Salčin played a critical role in defending various sectors, including Mojmilo, Dobrinja, and Nedžarići. He is credited with preventing enemy forces from seizing strategic positions on Mojmilo hill, which helped protect surrounding neighborhoods. He also facilitated the movement of Alija Izetbegović through Dobrinja during a period when it served as a vital transit point.

Salčin was killed by sniper fire at Saraj-polje near Nedžarići. For his contributions to the defense of the country, he was posthumously awarded the ‘Zlatni ljiljan’ (Golden Lily), the highest wartime recognition, in 1994. His legacy is commemorated through various streets, squares, and sports halls named in his honor.
