Rammellzee retrospective opens at Museion in Bolzano

The Museion museum in Bolzano is hosting ‘RAMM:ELL:ZEE TIME:LINE’, the first major European retrospective dedicated to the late New York artist, rapper, and theorist Rammellzee (1960–2010). The exhibition features over 150 works, many of which have never been exhibited in Italy before, highlighting his radical influence on 1980s American underground and hip-hop culture.

Curated by Hugo Vitrani and Cédric Fauq in collaboration with the Palais de Tokyo and Capc, the exhibition explores Rammellzee’s unique theories, such as ‘Gothic Futurism’ and ‘Iconoclastic Panzerism’. His work sought to sabotage conventional language by transforming letters into living, armored creatures, treating calligraphy as a tool of resistance.

The artist’s connection to Italy is also highlighted through the Fondazione Carrieri Noesi in Martina Franca. Originally known as Studio Carrieri, the foundation was established by Lidia Carrieri, who facilitated Rammellzee’s residency in Puglia, bridging his New York roots with the Italian art landscape.
