Ramón Mercader: The Spanish communist who assassinated Leon Trotsky

Ramón Mercader, the Spanish communist activist known for the assassination of Leon Trotsky, is remembered for his complex political history. A leader in the Catalan Communist Youth during the 1930s, Mercader fought in the Spanish Civil War against the Franco regime, notably participating in the Battle of Guadalajara.

Following the assassination of Trotsky in 1940, Mercader served 20 years in a Mexican prison. After his release in 1960, he was exiled to Cuba, where he later served as an advisor to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs under Fidel Castro. Despite his historical role, records indicate he was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union by the Supreme Soviet in 1960, a distinction that was reportedly never rescinded.
