Ramón Ángel Álvarez Ayala detained over ex‑mayor Carlos Manzo murder
Mexican federal forces captured Ramón Ángel Álvarez Ayala, known as “El R1”, in Atotonilco, Jalisco on 30 July. Authorities say he is the intellectual author of the 1 November 2025 killing of former Uruapan mayor Carlos Manzo Rodríguez and link him to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) as leader of the “Los R’s” cell.
After his arrest he was placed in preventive detention and transferred to the high‑security Altiplano prison in Almoloya de Juárez. His initial court hearing on the homicide has been postponed repeatedly, most recently rescheduled for 7 August 2026 following a defense request for additional time to review the case file.
Ayala has filed two amparo lawsuits seeking protection against alleged illegal detention and a possible extradition to the United States. The case has sparked political repercussions: his brother Roldán Álvarez quit the Morena party, citing political pressure, and PRI deputy Guillermo Valencia accused Morena deputy Leonel Godoy of being “R4”, a collaborator in the plot.
