Ramon Vega announces candidacy for FIFA presidency

Former Swiss international footballer Ramon Vega has announced his intention to run for the FIFA presidency in the March 2027 election, challenging incumbent Gianni Infantino. Vega, 55, is the first candidate to publicly declare a challenge against Infantino.

Vega’s campaign focuses on modernizing FIFA, implementing governance reforms, and restoring institutional trust. He aims to reunite the global football community and emphasizes that the sport belongs to the people rather than administrators. To formalize his candidacy, Vega must secure written support from at least five of FIFA’s 211 member associations by the November 18 deadline.

Infantino faces significant opposition following a failed attempt in July to involve private investors in a new FIFA commercial entity. Several European football associations, including those from England, Wales, France, and Serbia, have withdrawn support for his re-election. Additionally, UEFA leaders are meeting in Berlin to coordinate strategies regarding the leadership of the world governing body.
