Ramon Zapata, prominent PSTU activist and educator, dies in Maranhão

Ramon Zapata, a prominent philosopher, educator, and political activist from Maranhão, has passed away. A long-time militant of the Unified Socialist Workers' Party (PSTU), Zapata was widely recognized for his advocacy for the working class and public education.

Zapata’s political career spanned two decades, during which he participated in seven different elections between 2004 and 2024. His candidacies included roles such as city councilor in São Luís, Senator for Maranhão, state deputy, and candidate for the governorship of Maranhão. He also ran for mayoral positions in Alcântara.

In recent years, Zapata had been facing health challenges, including a battle with colorectal cancer. His death has drawn tributes from students, colleagues, and political allies who highlighted his lifelong commitment to socialist principles and social justice.
