Sami Lushtaku trial verdict pending in Kosovo

The Basic Court in Pristina continues the trial of former Skenderaj mayor Sami Lushtaku and co‑accused—including Ismet Haxha, Rrustem Rukolli and others—over the “Drenica 1” case. They face charges of organized crime and intimidation of protected witnesses. The proceedings focus on indictment points 16‑18, with final statements scheduled for 24 July.

Prosecutor Florije Shamolli urged convictions, alleging that two protected witnesses were offered money, housing in Fushë Kosovë and medical treatment to change their testimony. Defence lawyer Artan Qerkini rejected the allegations, describing the case as a prolonged EULEX‑driven prosecution marred by procedural errors and claiming his client is innocent. The court is set to deliver its final judgment after hearing both sides.

The trial underscores ongoing tensions over war‑time accountability and the role of EULEX in Kosovo’s justice system.
