Ramzan Kadyrov limits Chechen troop deployments to Ukraine

Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov is reportedly attempting to limit the number of Chechen personnel sent to fight in Ukraine, despite his public support for Vladimir Putin. Sources indicate that Kadyrov seeks to avoid sacrificing the Chechen population for interests that do not align with those of the Chechen republic.

While Kadyrov claimed during an April meeting with Putin that Chechnya had trained and deployed over 70,000 soldiers, these figures are contested. Data from Mediazona suggests that approximately 540 Chechen deaths have been confirmed, representing about 0.2% of total Russian losses. This discrepancy suggests that many units associated with Chechnya, such as the Ahmat special forces, may include a significant number of volunteers from other Russian regions. For instance, commander Apti Alaudinov noted that only about a quarter of the Ahmat unit members are actually Chechen.

The Ahmat units have gained notoriety on social media, often referred to as ‘TikTok troops’ due to their frequent posting of combat footage, though some content is believed to be filmed away from the actual front lines.
