Ramzan Kadyrov re-elected Chechen leader with 99.85% of the vote
Ramzan Kadyrov, the leader of the Chechen Republic and a close ally of Vladimir Putin, has been re-elected to a fifth term with 99.85% of the vote. According to the Russian Central Election Commission, this result surpasses his previous record of 99.73% in 2021. The two opposing candidates, Ismail Denilkhanov and Khalid Nakaev, each received 0.05% of the vote.
The regional elections in Chechnya were held alongside broader Russian elections for the State Duma and various governorships. In several other Russian regions, including Mordovia, Tuva, Belgorod, and Bryansk, Kremlin-backed incumbents also secured decisive victories.
Kadyrov has led Chechnya since 2007 and maintains significant autonomy from Moscow in exchange for regional stability. International observers and human rights activists have frequently criticized the electoral process in the republic and accused Kadyrov of human rights violations, including the suppression of political opposition and journalists.
