Ramzan Kadyrov's Chechen forces show low casualty rates in Ukraine

Ramzan Kadyrov, the leader of the Russian republic of Chechnya, has claimed to have sent over 70,000 fighters to the war in Ukraine, representing approximately nine percent of Chechnya's male population. However, data suggests a significant discrepancy between these claims and the reality on the battlefield.

According to an analysis by the Russian exile news outlet Mediazona, as of mid-August, only 543 Chechens have been recorded as killed in the conflict. This figure accounts for just 0.2 percent of all Russian military fatalities, despite Chechens making up 1.1 percent of the total Russian population.

Observers suggest that Kadyrov may be intentionally limiting the number of combatants sent to the front to maintain domestic stability and preserve his own power within Chechnya. This strategy appears to be supported by Vladimir Putin, as maintaining order in the region is viewed as a priority for the Kremlin.
